We ascend that slope using this monumental
staircase built in 1738 by Pietro Passalacqua. Passalacqua
later worked on several basilica facades in Rome. While these
steps could use a bit of spiffying up, they were extensively
repaired after being damaged in 1991 by Serb shelling.
