Let's start though a bit to the south. After our Dubrovnik visit, we ventured north along the Dalmatian coast. Views such as this are typical: communities hug the shores and over a 1000 islands, many of them inhabited, rise steeply from the Adriatic. Except for the southernmost islands and coast where Dubrovnik was able to hold its independence, the rest of Dalmatia became Venetian territory starting in the 12th century.
