This liturgical use of Croatian helped keep the country staunchly Catholic even while all sorts of other nations were running it -- and it helped keep alive Croatian language and culture.Commissioned in the late 1920s to commemorate Gregory's 1000 year anniversary, this statue started out in the Palace peristyle; but the Italians moved it outside during their WWII occupation. The toe is shiny from tourists kissing it. Doing so makes wishes come true. Better a bronze toe than a bachelor frog, perhaps.
