Most of the historical locomotives are kept in the great hall -- a huge room in the back of the museum. It's highlight is the turntable, a device that turns the locomotives around so that they can reverse direction.
Above you see a set of locomotives lined up around the turntable. Below, folks await the twice-daily demonstration.
Below an "explainer" discusses the mechanics of the turntable before turning around this historic Stirling Single. Another demonstration allows visitors to look inside a working steam engine. This highly stylized train achieved high speeds in the 1880s with its huge (8 foot) drive wheel. In 1895 it raced against other trains in speed demonstrations.
