First Passenger Cars

Here's a replica of a very early railway car (1829).  Its design owes much to the stagecoach -- the only mass transport device known at that time.  It ran on the Liverpool-Manchester line, the first intercity steam passenger line.


Below is the seat used by the guard.  One per train in a green uniform.

The steps below were required as elevated train platforms were not created until later -- so passengers had to climb from the ground.

The replica was built in 1930 to commemorate the centenary of the Liverpool-Manchester Railway.
