Nantucket -- Here the glacier stopped. Thanks to my NASA friends for this picture of Nantucket, a smiling kind of place from many angles. The Laurentide ice sheet that covered much of the upper half of North America left about 100 square miles of rock and sand 30 miles from anywhere else. Nantucket may mean "far away island" in the language of the indigenous Wampanoag who got there first. About 5000 years ago, global warming melted enough ice to make this an island. The Atlantic has been shaping it ever since.
