Nantucket -- Here the Sanford Farm thicket reaches the Atlantic. This reserve was part of about 29,000 acres that served as a commons, a coop type structure where cattle and sheep could graze. Nine men bought the land from the Mayhews in 1659. They paid 30 pounds at 2 hats -- which is now the coat-of-arms for the town. Some of their names kept popping up in island history for generations such as the Coffins and the Macys.
