Nantucket -- Ospreys grow here with a little help. Not much else does. Around 1750, the typical New England farm produced 80-100 bushels of corn per acre. Here they got 25. They tried sheep but the animals were small with little wool. In 1776, the island was producing food for only 10% of its population. Something better had to come along.
