Nantucket -- Along the walls are the implements of the whaling profession, and their explanations. Once the great whale destroyed their mothership, 20 Essex crewmen escaped in a 3 whaleboats. As some died of thirst, the men reached a small island but exhausted its food supply in a week and set sail again. When food got scarce, they ate those who had already starved. When cadavers ran short, they drew lots to see who would provide dinner. Eight men were eventually rescued nearly 100 days after the white wale destroyed the Essex. Seven men had been eaten.
