Nantucket -- Sailors had much down time which would typically be spent crammed into the forecastle. Most developed the hobby of scrimshaw, carving whale teeth. Here we see an elaborate contraption called a swift used to wind skeins of yarn into balls. With over 100 pieces, this was the most difficult of scrimshaw objects to create. "Moby DIck" speaks much of the whalecraft and discusses the art of scrimshaw.
