Nantucket -- ... the Jared Coffin house, called "the Moors." It hasn't been his house for a long time and when he moved out, it became a hotel (and was probably where the town's first tourist, Herman Melville, stayed.) With its brick and slightly diminishing windows as they rise to the third story, it looks a bit like the Edwardian houses being built then in Great Britain. The movement on this side of the Atlantic is called Federal Architecture. This is one of 12 distinguished Federal brick buildings in the historic district, and one of at least 5 attributed to a stone mason who served as architect. His name was Christopher Capen. The Coffins were among the original 9 families on the island and a school was built for just Coffin descendants (which included just about every kid on the island.) Jared Coffin who paid for this building was obviously well off. But his cousin was the man who came for dinner after losing the lottery on board the Essex whaleboat as it tried to make its way to safety in South America.
