Nantucket -- Nantucket's political affiliation in colonial days was not with Puritan Massachusetts but with the New York colony which emphasized the separation of church and state.Methodists first organized here in 1799 and this early 19th century church survived the Great Fire of 1846. Today their Greek Revival facade (another work by Federick Brown Coleman) stands next to the Pacific Bank on Centre Street. Note the shingled sides. Quaker frugality still prevails. Inside is its jewel, a Thomas Appleton pipe organ from 1831 which has been continually played except for a recent refurbishment.
