Nantucket -- One of the most striking buildings in town is the Atheneum, built immediately after the Great Fire of 1846. (The previous building was originally a Universalist Church and was consumed in the conflagration.) Its first librarian was the scientist Maria Mitchell who served here 18 years. The architect is the same Frederick Brown Coleman who created the Greek Revival mansions on upper Main Street.
