Ettal Abbey, Bavaria, Germany -- Despite a few symmetry glitches, the exterior is quite pleasant even if Enrico Zuccalli's plan was imperfectly executed. Inside, this once-Gothic space explodes into the baroque. It's the product of Ettal's golden age under Abbot Placidus II Seiz. Luckily the place was gutted by a fire in 1744 -- providing the opportunity for some of Bavaria's best artists to deploy their craft. Besides the master architect Zuccalli, the up-and-coming sculptor Johann Baptist Straub integrated the pulpit and 6 spectacular side altars into this magnificent rotunda.
