Ettal Abbey, Bavaria, Germany -- The large (about 100 yard by 100 yard) square is enclosed by buildings which appeared roughly like this around 1644. (The monastery was secularized, sold off in pieces in the early 1800s; some of what we see here was rebuilt in the 1900s when the Benedictines re-established their abbey here.) The present school has about 400 students who (this may sound like déjà vu to some of you) study Latin and Greek.
