Schloss Herrenchiemsee, Bavaria, Germany -- Despite his many palaces, Ludwig's most lasting contribution to the arts will probably be his sponsorship of Wagner. Politically, he will be remembered as the King who lost Bavaria's independence as it became a state in the German Empire under Bismarck.
