Ettal Abbey, Bavaria, Germany -- Spectacularly rising to the skies is the 80-foot-diameter dome showing the followers of St. Benedict in this southern German baroque masterpiece by the Austrian, Johann Jakob Zeiller. While twelve-sided, pilasters cover the corners, giving the appearance of a circle. Large windows flood the area with light, enhancing the feeling that we are looking up to heaven.
