Ettal Abbey, Bavaria, Germany -- Despite Luis IV's fresh new statue from Pisa, the monastery was not all that important as a pilgrimage destination during the later middle ages. But after the baroque remodeling in the 1700s, it became quite popular. Originally this was a double monastery: separate wings held monks and nuns. For a while, Knights and their wives also lived here in a third community, but that did not work out long term.
