We took advantage of John and Francimar's visit to spend four days in the far east -- of France in the Alsace area. We'll post the rest of our pictures of this trip (about 100) soon. In the meantime, here's the photos with our newest weds:
Our eastward journey took us from Paris through the Champagne region, then Lorraine, and finally Alsace on the German border (which we eventually crossed). If we had been a hundred years earlier, we'd have been in Germany as this part of the world changes into the hands of whoever won the last war. It's a place steeped in sauerkraut, sausage, and good white wine.
We stopped at this former capital of the Champagne region for a picnic lunch that we bought at an open air market. Unfortunately the cathedral was closed and we didn't have time to go into the former abbey (now a museum). We did have a picnic lunch in front of the nicely landscaped canal shown at the top of the page. That's a hospital in the background
Soon we were on the tollroad again on the way to Nancy, where the Dukes of Lorraine and Louis XV's Polish father-in-law left behind one of the most beautiful squares we've found in the Provinces. We fought the rush hour traffic into town but were rewarded with a walk in a well landscaped park called la Pepiniere.

Inside the garden are carefully laid out flowerbeds including this one commemorating the Year 2000:

And like most public clocks in France, this one tells the correct time:
After a drink across from Nancy's cathedral (under serious repair), we were on our way to Obernai where we would spend several nights about a 1/2 hour east of Strasbourg.
