Actually, you dial 999 for rescue services in the UK (but even 112 like it does in the rest of the European Union). Here's a photo taken in the town's pedestrian shopping district. This isn't as silly as it looks; the Brits found they were not meeting their target of responding to emergencies within 8 minutes at least 75% of the time. Getting a bike into congested areas where the rider/technician can stabilize the patient until a proper ambulance arrives got them a lot closer to this target. These "ambubikes" have sirens and flashers (hopefully not the rider) as well as radios and defibrillators. 17% of the time, the rider resolves the problem and the vehicle ambulance turns around. (Recently I was in the Detroit airport where the long concourses are patrolled by cops on Segways. Not even the Motor City thinks every problem can be solved by getting into a car!)
