A few hundred yards from the huge Anglican Minster is the 1864 Gothic Revival Roman Catholic church of St. Wilfred (an abbot from the early middle ages who helped rid the church of Celtic traditions in favor of those from Rome). Its 147-foot bell tower was wrapped for repairs which finished a couple months after this picture was taken.
Over the main door is what the parish calls the most detailed Victorian carving in York. I was so excited by it that the camera trembled in my hand:
