Nantucket -- About the time is became obvious that the land couldn't support its population, a whale wandered into the harbor and was captured within a week. This provided Nantucket farmers with the idea that they could harvest these huge beasts from boats about the size of an adult sperm whale's mouth. By 1690 the Whaling industry started little Nantucket on its way to fame and fortune.
