Nantucket -- ...heated with a large fireplace with niches for baking and other specialized tasks. To build the house, Mary Gardner's father provided the land and Jethro's father wood from his sawmill in New Hampshire. As an indicator of the lack of vitality in the Nantucket economy before the whaling boom, Jethro and Mary moved their family (6 children) to the mainland in 1708 where they purchased a farm. These were descendants of two of the most prominent families on the island!Four years after they moved to mainland Massachusetts, a Nantucket vessel was blown out to sea during a gale -- and took the island's first Sperm Whale. (Others had previously beached themselves.)
