Nantucket -- The portrait above by Pollard Limner is of Jethro's bride, Mary Gardner Coffin. Their marriage was a Romeo-and-Juliet match between two feuding clans made up of the original families who tried to restrict grazing on the commons (9 full sharers) and those who came after (called the half-sharers who each got 1/54th.) Half sharers also suffered restrictions on holding public office and land.Inside and out, this is a plain house where the family would gather during the winter into a few rooms...
