Nantucket -- The side treatment is more typical of the average wealthy Nantucket home. The front is clapboard and the side is shingled. Nantucket trees were scrawny but could produce such tiles. Herman Melville commented in Moby Dick that " pieces of wood in Nantucket are carried about like bits of the true cross in Rome."The Macy family produced a gentlemen who went to sea and hated it. He came back with a red star tattooed on each hand and a desire to make his living another way. After several failures in Massachusetts, he started a store in New York City and R.H. Macy's chain of stores still carries that red star emblem.
