Nantucket -- The Whalers of Nantucket were the first to master the Gulf Stream (which the British felt was insignificant and so it took them an extra two weeks to cross the Atlantic.) While Postmaster General, Benjamin Franklin received an accurate map of the Gulf Stream from one of his Folger cousins. (Franklin's mother was Abiah Folger.) It's time to talk coffee. Nantucket reached peak population of 10,000 in 1840. The population returned to that level in 2002. When the whaling industry crashed, the sailors of Nantucket decided to try prospecting during the California Gold Rush.
