High Divide Trail -- Sol Duc Area, Olympic National Park

The trail descends to Heart Lake.  Can you figure out how it got that name?  This very cold-watered lake is surrounded by a sub alpine meadow, a very fragile ecosystem that can take a century to cover a bare spot once the vegetation is trampled upon.  Nearby signs (and ranger visits) caution us to keep our big shoes on the designated trails.
